It is now known that communication on the Internet is moving inexorably towards video content. So why start a blog? Isn’t that counterproductive? And is blogging really dead?
The answer is simple: blogging is still alive and well.
Just think that there are millions of blogs in the world and over 7 million new articles are posted every day on WordPress alone (you can see the number of articles published in real-time here).
So I would say that the statistics speak for themselves: we can definitively dispel the idea that the world of blogging is in decline.
So why start a blog nowadays? Well, there are numerous reasons for doing this and in this article, I wanted to list 15 of them.
These are the same reasons that led me to create my first blog back in 2010 and that convinced me to invest all of myself in the world of blogging.
Here are 15 reasons why you should start a blog in 2021
Let’s take a small step back: what is a blog?
A blog is nothing more than a website on which content is periodically posted, just like this one you are reading right now.
But what leads a person or a company to create a blog?
There are so many reasons to start a blog. Here are the main ones:
- A blog is an excellent source of income
- You can work where you want, when you want
- Inspire yourself and others
- The blog belongs to you
- You improve your communication skills
- You learn new skills
- Build your brand online
- Expand your business
- To do your dream job
- To find new customers
- Meet new people (and find new partners!)
- Position yourself as an expert and become an authority in your industry
- Increase self-esteem
- It makes you grow both as a person and as a professional
- Make the world a better place
1- A blog is an excellent source of income
The number one reason is that blogging is one of the cheapest ways to start your own business.
In fact, there are many ways to make money with a blog, from affiliations to partnerships, up to creating a real career as a web writer.
But how much do you earn with a blog?
There is no one answer that fits all blogs. There are blogs that earn hundreds of thousands of dollars every day and blogs that earn nothing.
A survey of 1,000 bloggers by Blogging.com found that:
- 17% are able to support their lifestyle and family with their blog
- 81% earn less than $ 100 from the blog
- 2% spend less than 2 hours a day blogging but earn more than $ 150,000 (such as Tim Ferriss).
So what differentiates a blog that bills thousands per month from one that earns nothing?
The answer is simple: blogging is a real business. How many companies open every day and then close after a very short time because they don’t invoice?
Think of the shops, the restaurants, the bars … Often these are activities that are opened blindly, without knowledge of the market or marketing strategies. And they promptly close because they do not collect enough.
A blog is the same as an offline business. Opening a blog is very simple, you just need to buy a domain, install WordPress and that’s it.
But there are so many other skills you need to learn if you want to be successful.

2- You can work where you want, when you want
Another advantage of blogging, which is also perhaps the strongest reason that pushed me to create a career entirely on the internet is that you can work from wherever you want and when you want.
You can create your own studio at home, you can travel the world, choose to work on top of a mountain or on a beach in front of the sea. And you don’t have to stamp cards, ask for holidays or respect specific working hours.
You can manage both your workplace and the time and hours you want to dedicate to your work in complete autonomy.
3- One of the reasons why you should start a blog in 2021 is to inspire yourself and others
One of the reasons I love most about blogging is to document your life and inspire other people.
I am constantly inspired by the bloggers I follow and in turn, through writing, I try to inspire others to pursue their dreams and desires.
And do you know what the most satisfying part is? Comments, emails, interactions with the audience that follows you. Browse this blog, read the comments that people leave me. You are my true inspiration!
As a blogger, you can inspire people in an infinite number of ways.
4- The blog belongs to you
A question that I get asked very often is:
Why should I start a blog when I can write what I want on social media?”
Well, the answer is pretty intuitive: social media doesn’t belong to you. If one day Facebook, Instagram, or – I know – Medium, decide to close their doors, all your content would be lost.
A blog is yours instead. All the content you write will always be yours.
If that’s not enough, think of another very simple thing. To find new customers, or rather, to be found by them, what better than a good positioning on Google?
And the best way to do it… yes, it is the blog.
Think about it for a moment. When you searched for something on Google, perhaps to solve a problem or to buy something, what did you find in the search results?
I am willing to bet that in 99% of cases you have found blog articles., not posts on social networks. Blog articles, perhaps well-positioned because they are written from an SEO perspective.
For this reason, a blog should always be your first choice if you want people to be able to find you.
Social media, on the other hand, are perfect for promoting your blog articles.
5- You improve your communication and writing skills
Another advantage of starting a blog is that it incredibly improves both your writing and communication skills.
Perhaps at first, writing will not be easy for you, especially if you are not used to it. Let’s face it: who has never been afraid of the blank sheet?
The good thing is that writing is like running. The first day will be tough, the next day will be easier. It’s all about training and consistency.
Just write for just 20 minutes a day and after a few days you will realize that writing will be easier and easier, the words will flow more spontaneously and you will develop a unique and unmistakable style.
This will develop your creativity, your lateral thinking and people will willingly read what you want to communicate.
6- You learn new skills
When I started my first blog, I didn’t do it because I imagined that one day it would become my job (in fact, there are many things I didn’t know before starting a blog).
I only opened it because I have always loved writing and having a virtual place where my thoughts flow was something incredible.
Over time, I discovered that a blog can become a job.
And so I started studying lots of new things, learning lots of new skills, abilities, and skills: web writing, SEO but also psychology, marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, copywriting, and so on.
And I assure you that few jobs can give you skills like the world of blogging.
But what are all those transversal skills useful for a blogger?
Here are the ones that in my opinion are indispensable:
- Leadership
- Empathy
- Web writing
- SEO
- Copywriting
- Hints on digital marketing.
7- Build your brand online
One of the main reasons why opening a blog is undoubtedly the possibility of building a personal brand, which is essential if you want to become a so-called digital entrepreneur or if you want to become a freelance.
First of all, what does “personal branding” mean?
“Personal branding is the activity with which you first become aware of and then structure your brand or your personal brand. It can be defined as what is collectively said, heard and thought by people about you and the services you offer, in your professional and non-professional life.”
Wikipedia
But the definition of personal branding that I like most is undoubtedly this one:
“Branding is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.”
Jeff Bezos
Personal branding is therefore everything about our reputation, what characterizes our person, our values, and our belief system that creates our personal brand and differentiates us from our competitors.
But not only that: it is also the ability to transmit these values and to promote oneself on the market.
That’s why, in my opinion, this is one of the most important reasons to start a blog in 2021. It’s one of the best ways to develop your personal branding.
Through a blog, in fact, you can demonstrate not only your knowledge and skills but also your personality, your lifestyle, the things you believe in, and the values that are important to you.
This will not only attract people who share your same ideals and values and will help you create a loyal community around you and your brand but will naturally attract all your potential (and future) customers as well.
8- Expand your business
Already after all these points that we have covered, it is easy to understand how a blog can help you expand your online business.
For example, you can be a professional who wants to be found by a greater number of customers or maybe you have a physical store or e-commerce and you want to increase your sales.
Let’s say you have a shoe shop. You could be found directly, perhaps by people who know you, through word of mouth or because someone has searched Google for “shoe shop in city X”. However, a very small audience because they are looking for (and therefore know) your business.
But if you wrote articles about the best running shoes or the best shoes to take the first steps, then you would intercept a much wider audience that you can then divert to your shop or your e-commerce.
But how to intercept user searches on Google?
Very simple: just do a keyword search, for example with Semrush.
9- To do your dream job
We mainly talked about business: expanding your business, finding new customers (we’ll see more in a moment), improving our personal branding, and so on.
But there is a reason why you should start a blog that, in my opinion, dominates all the others: that of pursuing a profession you love.
And I’m not just talking about writing. Obviously, if you love to write, then having a blog is really the best thing in the world because it allows you to express all of yourself in a unique way.
But even if you don’t love writing, having a blog can really help you live the life you want while still doing the job you love.
First of all, because you don’t have to write your articles yourself.
In fact, you can delegate them to a copywriter (you can find numerous professionals, for example on Fiverr) or rely on artificial intelligence tools that write blog articles completely autonomously following your instructions (Jarvis).
10- To find new customers
We have mentioned several times during the course of this article how important a blog is for finding and acquiring new customers. But how does this happen?
Mainly through two paths, which we have however already seen: personal branding and SEO positioning (which you can also help with through advertising).
Through the blog, you can in fact demonstrate your skills and your knowledge and this allows you to attract new potential customers, who often find you thanks to Google.
It’s something I do with this blog too.
People do a Google search, I know, “how to start a blog” and find one of my articles in the first position.
They start reading, maybe they scroll through several articles and verify that I am really competent in my profession.
Then they think: “Ok, this person may be able to help me” and they book a consultation with me, through which I help them create or develop their own blogs.
So if you work well with your blog, you will no longer have to struggle to find new customers but the customers themselves will find you and will want to work with you.
11- Meet new people (and find new partners!)
One of the paramount reasons why you should start a blog right now is to meet new people.
Through your blog, you will not only attract new customers but you will also get in touch with the people who follow you.
In addition to knowing and relating to your audience, interesting partnerships can also be created through the blog. This is the case of people who contact you to develop a project together or who ask you to write sponsored content.
But this only happens if you can position yourself as an expert in your field and become an authority.
12- Position yourself as an expert and become an authority in your niche.
If you want to position yourself as an expert you must be able to create content that knows how to intercept and solve a problem. But if you want users to come back to your blog, again and again, it’s also important to learn how to entertain your audience.
And if you don’t want to be labeled as a “scam guru” (and oh my God how many there are on the web! They sprout like mushrooms every day 😪) you don’t just have to fill your blog with big words and numbers but show that you say what you do and what you do what you say.
Don’t show earnings of millions of dollars if you don’t actually earn them. This way you will only attract a bunch of desperate people who believe that with a blog you can make big money out of thin air. But you know what? They won’t come back to you.
Rather, build relationships of trust. Show that you are sincere, that you put people ahead of your earnings.
13- Increase self-esteem
Most people who start a blog suffer from what is called “The Imposter Syndrome”.
The impostor syndrome is something we (almost) all often fall back into.
But what is this syndrome then? It is the belief – more or less rational – that our skills are not that high, even if in reality they are. And that showing the world what we know how to do is a bit of a way to deceive those who follow us.
Tell the truth, have you ever felt like this at least once? I do many times.
If you’ve ever wondered “Who am I to teach someone anything?” or if you look around and only see people more prepared than you, brighter, smarter … well, you probably also tend to sabotage yourself thanks to the impostor syndrome.
I’ll tell you a secret. Only prepared and truly competent people suffer from this syndrome because they are the most objective people, who tend to look at things rationally. And they tend to underestimate themselves.
Far less intelligent people, on the other hand, often suffer from an opposite syndrome, namely what is called the Dunning-Kruger Effect, a cognitive distortion that leads less experienced people to overestimate their abilities and who do not know how to recognize their limits and their own. errors.
So the good news: if you suffer from the impostor syndrome, you are on the right track because you probably have all the skills you think you don’t have.
So, how can a blog help us eliminate (or at least reduce) our impostor syndrome and instill greater self-confidence? Exactly, through the interactions with the people who follow us.
So what needs to be done? Simple: letting go, gathering feedback, and constantly improving your work.
Self-esteem will rise and the impostor syndrome will eventually dissolve!
14- It makes you grow both as a person and as a professional
If there is one type of “scam guru” from which you absolutely must stay away, it is the one that promises you a high and easy income in a short time with a blog.
No! Do not! Nein! Niet!
Really stay away from these damn leeches.
Blogging can really bring a lot of satisfaction, both professional and economic, but nothing comes out of nothing. You will have to study, test, make mistakes, redo. Not once, not twice.
Constantly.
If you’re not ready for this, trust me: leave your freelance career alone, don’t try to become a digital entrepreneur. Challenges will always lurk and if you’re not ready to tackle the issues that come with them, maybe you should opt to be an employee.
Fewer BS, less hassle, less responsibility. There is nothing wrong with wanting it.
15- The most important reason to start a blog in 2021: make the world a better place
Finally, we got to the end of the list of reasons why you should start a blog in 2021. The last reason – but not least in order of importance – that I firmly believe in is that a blog that is well done, well written and that brings true value can make the world a really better place.
And even if it were not our world, at least only the world of the web, constantly disfigured by self-proclaimed gurus, wretches who screw other wretches, scammers, spammers, and all kinds of scum.
What can you do?
Make your contribution, offer valuable content, donate even before expecting something in return.
And as someone said, be the change you want to see in the world.
And if you are ready to start this fantastic adventure, start your blog now.
To your success!
